Although both these programs are for nurses interested in a doctorate program, the focus is different. A doctor of Nursing practice focuses specifically on nursing practice. Employment opportunities involve nursing administration and clinical nurse faculty. A PhD in nursing focuses on nursing research and includes career opportunities like a nurse scientist. The curriculum for each program differs as well. Phd programs focus directly on trajectories of chronic illness and care systems. DNP programs are directed towards leadership skills, advanced specialty practice and health care improvement.
The degree objectives differ as well:
DNP-To create nursing leaders in interdisciplinary health care teams by providing students with the tools and skills necessary to translate evidence gained through nursing research into practice, improve systems of care and measure outcomes of patient groups, populations and communities (Duke University).
PhD-To prepare nurse scientists to develop new knowledge for the science and practice of nursing. Graduates will lead interdisciplinary research teams, design and conduct research studies and disseminate knowledge for nursing and related disciplines, particularly addressing trajectories of chronic illness and care systems (Duke University).
Currently, I am a supervisor on a med-surg/ortho unit. If I decided to continue my education in nursing, I would choose DNP. I would advance my practice further into nurse leadership and administration. This option better fits my career goals and the path I am already pursuing.
